What it takes to be part of innovation-led industry.. FASHION?

When Indian fashion industry was still finding its grounds for existence and acceptance, there was a huge lot of freshly baked designing students who faced the heat of the practical world. Amongst that lot, there were few who made their presence felt in the form of fashion shows and collection launches, while others started to get absorbed in secondary or tertiary career options.

Presently there are over 1000 fashion colleges & institutes in India which give out another 100K students every year. Do we have such absorption capacity in apparel/ accessory brands in India? Well, this is still a question that what’s the percentage of surety for placement of students who graduate every year. Apart from job seekers, there is a whole chuck of students who aspire to become entrepreneurs or to have their own label. This raises the bar of uncertainty and makes the market even more competitive. In current designing market which has a ‘Shantanu&Nikhil’, Rohit Bal, Manish Malhotra, Manish Arora and other fashion retail brands, it’s very tough for a student/ designer to make up his/her mark.

So, in such a cut throat competitive market, what should a budding designer do? Creativity has no boundaries but when we get into real practical world, then conscious decisions couples with calculative apprehensions needs to be considered. This can be achieved by taking the experience of places and types of professionals they work with.

Every industry has specific rules and protocols for people to follow, in order to get success or to get to top. But for a fragile & lucid industry like fashion, it becomes totally a matter of creative independence and correct effort that takes a person to the pinnacle.

Aman Mathur is yet another example of such amalgamation of talent, hard work, creativity and correct decisions. When he started form the South Indian film industry, it was the time for him to understand the versatile integrity of culture, designing patter, choices & interests. In fact, he stated in one of his interviews “it’s not crucial to wait for the right time, rather its crucial to take a decision and do every possible effort to make it right”. Being born and brought up in North India, his genes pulled him back to implant his creative factory in his hometown Lucknow.

In fashion industry on one hand when it takes a blink of eye to set off a prevalent fashion, it takes an entire lifetime to prove one’s efficiency and novelty. Call it luck, timing or perfect planning but truth is not going to change that there are certain fashion trends that gets accepted within no time, and on the other hand there are certain trends that don’t leave an impressionable mark. But, it’s the most blunt truth of this industry. The creative process engulfs a lot of thoughts, idea and intentions, which if gets reflected into the mounted dress, then it gives the instant push to the artist, or else it becomes battle of lifetime to prove oneself.

Let’s discuss few things that make or break a budding designer:

  1. NOVELITY

People are always attracted towards something that they haven’t seen before. Thus the first and foremost thing to have is novelty, the out of the box approach about things. Though creativity is always novel with a lint of one’s own self,  but yet the most celebrated designers are those who bring something on table which people have never imagined before.

Exclusivity includes something which they get one of its kind. In this highly competitive and self centered world, even customers don’t want someone else to have things that they own. And when it comes to designer wear, people are majorly sensitive about their dress getting repeated by someone else. Therefore consistent creativity is also required to keep the new influx of designs and made going on.

Apart from five basic senses in human body, there is one more sense that makes a huge difference in one’s personality – ‘common sense’. Though it sounds very mundane, but its actually true that in-order to achieve something massive in life, a person needs to have his/ her common sense most active. You never know from where the opportunity would knock at your door, which of your contact in phone book would give you most needed break in the life or which of your casual acquaintance would give you the sweetest fruit ! So, it’s very crucial to understand the connections one is making throughout the lifetime, and then try to connect the dots of life to attain the bigger picture.

In this fast age of Instagram, Facebook & Twitter, everything is a matter of few minutes or at max hours. Memes come and go, people easily tend to forget once they majorly admired. So another thing that helps you to make a permanent space in fashion world is persistence. Just keep doing the hard and good work, despite of the fact that success still seems to be miles ahead. But the person who stays in the race wins the race, if not immediately but eventually !!!

  1. Thanks for discussing your ideas. Something is that scholars have a solution between federal student loan along with a private education loan where its easier to select student loan debt consolidation than over the federal student loan.

  2. Hey! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any problems with hackers? My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up losing a few months of hard work due to no back up. Do you have any methods to protect against hackers?
